How To Boost Wireless Signal

It get’s extremely frustrating when you’re paying good money for high speed internet yet you’re computer can barely catch the signal of the wifi router. There are many ways in which you can boost the signal of you’re router and consequently increase it’s speed. So let’s get started!

Placement
The first thing is placement. If there are multiple users in the home, then try and place the router in a central location. In this way there is equal signal wherever you are in the home. If the router is downstairs and you are upstairs, then place the router on a high shelf. This will significantly improve the signal.

Interference
Another method of boosting the signal is replacing or adjusting devices which run on the 2.4GHz frequency range. The reason being is that devices which run on this frequency range significanly affect the signal of the router. Some of these devices include cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors and security alarms.

Try and keep the router away from walls and don’t keep it on the floor. All these things interfere with the signal. Oh, metal objects interfere as well!

Broadcast Channel
Another method, which once for me boosted my internet speed from 2mb/s to 9.5mb/s is by changing the router signal channel. You’re router broadcasts on a channel, between 1 and 11. Now if you’re neigbours routers are using the same channel, this can significantly affect you’re connection.

The way to check which channel you are on and who else is on that same channel is by using a free piece of software by the name off inSSider. It can be downloaded here:

See which channels are not in use or as much and change you’re channel to one of these less busier channels. In order to change the channel of the router, you need to log in to it. Visit this tutorial which explains how to log in:
How To Access Router

The way I went about doing it is I started checking the speed at every channel. So I changed the signal channel to 1 to start with, headed over speedtest.net and checked the speed. I did this with each channel until the speed jumped from 2mb/s to 9.5mb/s. My jaw dropped…seriously!

Antenna
Most antennas which come with routers these days are not of great quality. If you are able to with you’re router, unscrew you’re antenna and replace it with a new one that can deliver more power. Just a couple of quid’s investment can make a huge difference.

Wireless Repeater
An extremely effective way to boost the signal of you’re router is with a wireless repeater. It effectively extends the range of you’re router and the best thing is it doesn’t need any wiring. It basically just needs to be within range of you’re router, and it will bounce the signals out to you’re devices. Great!

Broadcast Mode
If you’re router supports it, use the 802.11n standard. This offers much greater range and signal strength than the common 802.11 a/b/g.

So there you go, there are a few ways in which you can boost you’re wifi signal. Let us know which method works best for you in the comments section.
