How To Use The Multi Window Feature On The Samsung Galaxy S3

The multi window feature has finally arrived for the Samsung Galaxy S3, thanks to the latest update from Samsung. Now if you’re like me, the first thing you do after the update is rummage through all the menus and settings to see what’s new! That’s when I realised the multi window capability. But what is the multi window feature?

It is basically a slick multi-tasking feature that allows you to have more than one app running on the screen at the same time. So that means you could be watching a video, whilst sending a text message to a friend! It really is a smart feature. So how do you use it?

Well first things first, you need to make sure you have the latest firmware update. So you need to be running Jellybean 4.1.2 which was released for me in December here in the UK.

Once you have updated you’re firmware, you then need to navigate to you’re taskbar (the drag down thing) and you will see two new buttons have been added, one of which is the multi window button. Make sure this is enabled.

Once that button has been enabled, navigate back to the home screen and then keep hold of the back button.

You will notice that when you hold down the back button, a tab pops up on the left centre of the screen.

Dragging this tab to the right reveals a list of you’re apps. You can then drag an app you wish to use and place it on the screen. You can then drag another app and as you drag it to the main screen, you will see that you have a choice of placing it either in the top or bottom half of the screen.

Here I have open my Gmail and my messaging app:

You then have a slider in the middle with which you can alter how much you can see of either app. You will also notice that there are 2 extra buttons when you press the slider. The button on the left allows you to swap the apps around. In the following pic, I have swapped the apps around:

Now if you really want to take multi-tasking to the extreme like me, then you can even have a video playing at the same time!

Galaxy S3 Multi-Window Video

You can drag the playing video around the screen whilst it plays. Awesome! In order to get a video on whilst multi tasking, use the video player app, and when the video begins playing full screen, just tap the button which appears on theĀ bottom right.

Ok so that’s it, that’s how to use the multi-window feature on the galaxy s3.

Leave us a comment to let us know how it went!

Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with Jellybean 4.1.1 O.S. Is multi-tasking not available on Jellybean 4.1.1?
